One of the best things about American cuisine culture is that we have access to foods from all over the world. We adopt many ideas from different countries, and food is no exception. There is one food trend, however, that will most likely not gain popularity in America.
We all know that Japan is a forward-thinking nation, and the Japanese people have amazed us with their many inventive ideas. From their performances in the Olympics to their creativity in the kitchen, these people are not afraid to try new things.
The latest food-related news that has swept the nation is the extremely raw sushi served at Sushiro, a chain restaurant with locations in Japan. And when I say raw, I mean RAW.
The clam that was served up on a lump of rice at the restaurant wasn’t dead yet! It actually responded to the touch of the chopsticks. Could you eat a fish that was moving? I sure couldn’t.
Twitter user shoumizo3446 had ordered a plate of clam nigiri. I’m sure she wanted her meal to be fresh, but she didn’t want it that fresh!
“The tragedy of Sushiro,” the customer captioned. The nauseating video of the clam squirming around has already been viewed 6.5 million times, and given the popularity of sushi it will likely continue to gain viewers.
At first the clam looks like it is trying to crawl off the plate. Then, when it is prodded with a chop stick, it starts to raise up like an arm. All the while the thing is twitching back and forth, trying to get a feel for its surroundings. It even lifts itself completely off of the rice!
If you are not already weary about eating sushi, you should be. Fish contain mercury, a substance that is toxic to humans. Additionally, Renegade Health warns of the dangers posed by the parasites who live in the fish. If the seafood is still alive, it is likely that these unwanted organisms are, too.
Finally, wild-caught fish have compromised health due to the pollution that finds its way to the ocean. National Geographic discusses the many ways plastic is harmful to marine life. In particular, studies have shown that fish think plastic is food. They eat it and digest it in their bodies. So if the fish you are eating ate plastic, you now have a concentrated amount of it in your body.
That is not to say that if you adore sushi you need to give it up. Ginger is known to drastically reduce one’s chances of getting salmonella, and cooked fish is much safer than raw fish.
