Meet Lucas, the first Gerber Baby with Down Syndrome

Little Lucas is a warm cuddly boy who loves to laugh and play. He is also very outgoing, according to his mom, Cortney Warren.

A baby with Down Syndrome has been named the Gerber Baby for 2018, a first in the history of the contest launched 90 years ago.

Lucas, 18 months old, from Dalton, Georgia was one among 140,000 entries, but his «winning smile and joyful expression» made sure he was chosen as the «spokesbaby» for the baby products company. “Lucas’ winning smile and joyful expression won our hearts this year, and we are all thrilled to name him our 2018 Spokesbaby,” Bill Partyka, president and CEO of Gerber, said in a statement.

Lucas’ parents — mom Cortney Warren and dad Jason Warren — hope this will bring more acceptance for people with conditions such as Down syndrome.

«We’re hoping this will impact everyone — that it will shed a little bit of light on the special needs community and help more individuals with special needs be accepted and not limited,» Jason told Today. «They have the potential to change the world, just like everybody else.»

Lucas is a warm cuddly boy who loves to laugh and play. He is also very outgoing, said mom Cortney, who entered Lucas into the contest on a whim when a relative mentioned about an ad that was seeking submissions.

After she posted the photo on Instagram with the contest hashtag, she and her husband, received a message stating their son had won from among many others. What a lovely surprise!

Cortney feels everyone should view her son as an energetic, playful baby and not one with Down Syndrome.

“We hope this opportunity sheds light on the special needs community and educates people that with acceptance and support, individuals with special needs have the potential to change the world — just like our Lucas,” Cortney said in a statement.

Jason also thinks Lucas is a pretty good role model. “We hope this will help people kick-start their own lives and give them more confidence,” he told Washington Post. “They might think that if Lucas can do this, what can I do in my own life?”

Lucas’ family will receive $50,000 as the Grand Prize Winner of the Gerber Baby Photo Search and we will be seeing the adorable baby with a contagious smile in all of the company’s social media platforms very soon. His parents said the money will be used to pay for Lucas’ college tuition fees.

The Gerber Baby logo design came up way back in the 1920s, where the company invited people to send in portraits of baby faces.

The winning sketch, sent in by Dorothy Hope Smith remains the synonymous logo of Gerber Baby. However, the Gerber Baby contest is of much recent time, and started in 2010.

Every year, Gerber would select their «spokesbaby» who would be the icon that represents the brand.

Lucas’ parents feel their little child is definitely up for the task of spokesbaby, even if he has no idea about his sudden celebrity.

“They only thing he knows is there’s more people waving at him, and he has to wave back,” dad Jason said.
